10 for 1 Campaign: The movement to liberate the airwaves
The grassroots movement to liberate the airwaves from corporate
control is growing in strength, but the people who "own" most of
the airwaves are fighting back. They continue to force the FCC to
close stations and intimidate other folks who have vowed to stay
on the air. Many folks in the micropower movement have vowed to
open 10 more stations around the U.S. for every station the FCC
closes. This page will show how you can help out and participate
in this campaign.
What You Can Do
- Start a new station
- Volunteer at an existing
microstation in your area
- Support the legal struggles
of those stations which are in court
- Talk to your friends and
family about micropower radio and how working class folks aren't
heard on the radio.
- Research who owns the
stations in your town.
- Read a book about pirate
radio or the history of radio in America
Key Strategies
- Strength in numbers
- The more of us there are the harder it is for the corporations
and their henchmen, the FCC, to shut us down. The more participants
there are in this movement for free radio, the more it benefits
our communities and shows our neighbors that their voices aren't
being heard.
- Solidarity / Operate in
the Open
- It doesn't help the movement if you operate a clandestine station
and the FCC closes you without anybody knowing. If you let other
microbroadcasters know that you exist, that can help build the
mutual aid network essential for our survival. You should let
your community know that you exist too. Many folks will understand
the neeed for alternative media that is controlled by some far
off corporation.
- Build Community / Don't
Do It Alone
- Get your neighbors and community members involved. Or if you
are a special interest station (i.e. punk music), get others with
the same interests involved. What's the point of reclaiming the
airwaves if you can't share the frequency with others who want
to make their voices heard? It's also hard to run a station just
be yourself (unless you are in a rural area), so get some local
folks involved. This turns the station into a community resource.
- Network
- Work with others who are liberating the airwaves or creating
alternatives to media controlled by the rich elites. There are
alternative news networks and organizations out there who can
help provide programming. Find people in your town who can report
on local events and news. Find somebody with a kick ass punk or
jazz record collection. Become involved with one of the microbroadcaster
networks.
