Protest Tech

Looking for a more creative way to protest?

Interview with TxtMob.com
In March of this year, several thousand protesters crowded the streets of Madrid, gathering suddenly in front of the offices of the Spanish ruling Popular Party (Partido Popular). These protests occurred one day prior to the Spanish general elections, and were organized to combat what participants argued was outgoing Prime Minister Jose Aznar's intentional manipulation of information regarding the March 11th Madrid train bombings for political gain. Similar gatherings soon appeared in Barcelona, in Madrid's Plaza Mayor, and other locations throughout Spain. Despite PP leader Mariano Rajoy declaring the gatherings as illegal assemblies, they were unable to make any arrests – the protests were coordinated via Short Message Service (SMS) enabled cell phones, and thus there was no single party to hold accountable.

The New York Model: Indymedia and the Text Message Jihad
Throughout the week in New York, independent journalists and activist groups used text-messaging technology to coordinate an impressive, groundbreaking campaign of direct action and comprehensive news reporting. It was one of the many creative, guerilla tactics employed by the decentralized resistance movement in North America that grew out of the WTO protests in Seattle in 1999. In contrast to the multi-million dollar security budgets for the Democratic and Republican conventions and at the recent FTAA meetings in Miami, activists are using existing technology that is virtually cost free to mobilize hundreds of actions and thousands of activists.

The latest protest tool: 'texting'
"Multiple reports of provocateurs setting trash fires in midtown," read one text message sent to 400-plus mobile phones this week through a service called Ruckus RNC 2004 Text Alerts.
