In the interests of transparency, I'm starting this thread to keep track of the messages I delete. I encourage other mods to also post what messages they're deleting.

Deleted posts:

2/15/05
Deleted 3 lesbian porno spam posts from General Discussion
4 porno spam posts deleted from Anarchists & Anarchisms
1 from the Crucible

2/25/04
Temporarily "moderated" several posts from Chuck0 to give him a taste of his own medicine.

Good idea. I wish I had seen this before I deleted about 20 lesbian porn spam posts... But I guess I'll just guess how many I deleted.

2/15

About 2-3 each from The Memory Hole, Struggle, Anarcho-Syndicalism, the three Infoshops, and the bottom five of the Flag Forums (What's new on Flag, Philosophy, Flag FAQ Collective, Marginalisation, and News And Events).

In instances where someone had replied to the spam, I deleted the spam post, but left everything else intact. If anyone thinks I should do otherwise, let me know.

Edit: And all the posts I deleted were the same lesbian spam.

nothing really transparent about it. quite unlike indymedia's system where deleted posts aren't really...they're moved (function "hidden") to publicly viewable archive.

hooray! porn spam no more! i just hope i don't ever have to read *flamebait deleted* here on flag's forums, though that dread is tossup with the dread that things could dissapear with no notice whatsoever.

I haven't seen the offending posts, but I feel uneasy at the way they've been handled.

Assuming the posts contained no malicious programming, then I cannot see why they had to be removed. Whoever posted them was quite upfront about their content (although I did wonder whether "Lesbians playing with each other" might have been fully-clothed lesbians playing cribbage or Hungry Hungry Hippos or something), and it's not like there were so many spam posts that they were a disruptive presence.

I think we are mostly mature and intelligent enough to ignore the spam, and that is exactly what we were doing, we don't need three new masters to protect us from it.

Now that's erotic.

I've gotta say i agree. Ignoring it isn't that hard.

i'm not going to be advertising porn sites or anything else for you or whomever to make $$ off.

try to obfuscate the point and throw out some ridiculous notions about heirarchy, i've heard all the ridiculous assertions before - thus we're all swivel-hips, right? because having a title based on # of posts is authoritarian, etc. etc. ad nauseum.

again, i'm not advertising porn sites for you or anyone.

Besides which, it was excessive and annoying.

Fair enough.

I genuinely believe that whoever posted that spam would not have made a cent from anyone who uses this forum. The main people who buy porn are middle-aged men. This is a very young forum, most people are too young to even qualify for a credit card. The only middle-aged man on this forum also happens to be gay.

I'm somewhat middle aged, not gay, but too poor for a credit card, but I also can't remember buying porn since high school

You're one of them now.

Like it or not, Poop, Morpheus and yourself have been put in a position of power over the rest of us. Whenever any of us make a post, we do so in the knowledge that it only appears because you have allowed it.

Much though I'm sure we will all consciously try to downplay that uncomfortable fact, when you were given the authority of moderators it heralded a subtle change in the dynamic of your relationship with flag's new underclass, those that were left behind.

I have no problem with making mods elected, recallable and mandated.

Which is no different than before, because Pomegranate has more control over these boards than we do. Realistically, your statement isn't really true because we'll catch enormous shit from you all if we start deleting non-spam posts. Plus large-scale censorship would probably kill the boards because most would leave.

I think we should explore this idea. Truth be told, Chiggins and his Retinue have killed flag over the last 18 months. I remember when i first came here, discussion was aplenty.

That said, moderation could quite easily kill it too.
