In the spring of 1993, San Francisco Mayor Frank Jordan launched an attack on the living standards of the city's working class by demanding a fare increase of 25 cents per ride on MUNI. MUNI is San Francisco's main public transit system, made up of motor coaches, trolleys, metro trains, and the world-famous cable cars, with approximately 686,000 passenger boardings every weekday. In response to Jordan's attack, a small group of anti-capitalist radicals engaged in a seven-month campaign against the fare hike.

The basic perspectives of The Poor, the Bad and the Angry

A Contribution to the Politics of the Future

The basic perspectives of
The Poor, the Bad and the Angry

The world we must leave...

The Earth is being trashed by social relations based on money and market exchange. Every government, politician, army and police force defends this system. Politicians and political parties propose different management strategies for capital, but regardless of their differences, Alan Greenspan and Medea Benjamin, the Fox Network and Adbusters, Fidel Castro, the ecology lobby and the most bedraggled college campus socialist groups all agree -- a world based on wage-slavery is here to stay.

An Anarchist Guide to Critical Thinking

Anarchists have long supported the idea of developing critical thinking skills among free individuals. Critical thinking skills are important to anti-authoritarians, who are critical not just of government authorities, but of all experts and dogmatic knowledge. Critical thinking is also important to liberatory learning, otherwise known as "learning without schooling."

Anarcha-feminism

Anarchism and feminism have always been closely linked. Many outstanding feminists have also been anarchists, including the pioneering Mary Wollstonecraft (author of A Vindication of the Rights of Woman), the Communard Louise Michel, Voltairine de Cleyre and the tireless champion of women's freedom, Emma Goldman (see her famous essays "The Traffic in Women", "Woman Suffrage", "The Tragedy of Woman's Emancipation", "Marriage and Love" and "Victims of Morality", for example).

The Anarchist Case Against Voting and Elections

Anarchists are opposed to voting in elections and participating in election campaigns. Anarchists think that direct action and other alternatives are more likely to result in a better society than electing Candidate X to political office. Anarchists are also anti-statist and anti-hierarchy and see electoralism as contrary to our goals and practice. And much of so-called "democracy" is bogus and undemocratic, as over half of Americans who don't vote understand.
