Latvia is one of the 'Baltic States' of Northeastern Europe. It first gained its independence in 1918. However, in 1940 Latvia was occupied by the Soviet Union. For the next 51 years, Latvia was a republic of the Soviet Union during which time many civilians were imprisoned, thousands were exiled to Siberia and the rest were living without freedom and in fear of secret police.
